Waking Each Morning in Prayer

by Robert C. Frank

I have found it very helpful to begin each day in prayer. It took a while to learn how to do it, but now the moment I wake up each morning my prayer begins. The initial part of the prayer is always one of gratitude because there are so many things to be grateful for. I begin by thanking God for all the loving members of my family. Then I ask God for forgiveness so I can leave yesterday’s failures behind and start the day thinking about fresh opportunities. Finally I invite God’s spirit to live within me during the day.

All of us can either start our day worrying about our problems or being grateful for all the good things in our lives. Since gratitude is related to happiness, it seems like gratitude is the better way to start. Work on our problems will begin after we have had our coffee. As the day begins, announcers on TV quickly remind us of all of the problems that still exist in our world. It is very important to remember, however, that God has placed billions of loving people around the world as Christ’s Team who will be working on these problems with us using new tools provided by science and technology.

History reminds us that eventually the problems get solved and a more beautiful world is evolving that many of us call the kingdom of God. We all need to continue to share our skills to solve the world’s problems, but we also need to recognize and appreciate the much improved civilization that God has already given us.
