Where is God?

by Robert C. Frank

In the mix of political campaigns, social media, ISIL attacks, and all the other things going on in the world today, where is God? A first thought might be that God is in the Bible, but further thoughts remind us that the Bible is only a means for learning about God. The reality is that God is in every act of love taking place in the world today. It might be in the birth of a child or just helping someone find something in a supermarket. It might be in creating a breakthrough in the cure of a disease or just in helping someone learn to read. God is in every act of love, but human teamwork is required to make love functional.

We often look for theological or scientific proofs for the existence of God, but the physicist Paul Sabine once wrote the following in his book, Atoms, Men, and God: “Jesus declaration of a God of love can only command acceptance in so far as it can be verified in the inner experience of men and women, and find objective expression in their lives.” It is the spirit of our loving God living within people working together that is the verification of the existence of God.

There are many regions on earth where poverty and suffering are still very great. Christian organizations can always be found there working diligently to provide assistance. Their efforts are an example of God’s love made visible through the teamwork of loving people.
